The Dartmoor Yomp
The yomp has been going since 2008 and is usually held the week before the RMA Reunion, last weekend of September. Allowing people who are coming from abroad to attend two events, on the same homeward trip.
It covers 12 miles and is done at your pace from Princetown to Bickleigh, it is not a race, and it is not a silly load carry, more of a social bimble with a pie and a pint at the beginning and the end.
The event starts on the Friday with people meeting at Bickleigh. As there is NO accommodation it is tents, caravans, and campervans or as several have done, backs of cars.
Generally socialising and talking as only bootnecks can.
Next morning up bright eyed and bushy tailed and after breakfast get on a coach to take you all to Princetown, where you disembark and in your syndicates set off and wander on a set route with 3 RV’s, so you do not go thirsty, back to Bickleigh. Maps and route cards are provided.
Once back at Bickleigh it is quick shower and change and into the Sgts Mess by kind permission of the RSM, who has also relaxed the dress code for the week end and jeans and trainers are allowed. But NO MUDDY BOOTS.
Originally it started at the home of 42 CDO RM, Bickleigh Barracks but the last RSM, WO1 P Gilby RM kindly invited us into his mess. Saving us all a few pennies.
