Julian's Ride Across Britain
Julian Darwell-Stone
Lands End
Over the last few years Julian Darwell-Stone became more and more involved in road cycling. At the start of 2012 he was determined to find a challenge that demanded a little more effort and gave him the opportunity to raise funds for a cause close to his heart.
In September 2012 Julian will be joining several hundred cyclists in the Deloitte Ride Across Britain. They will travel 960 miles and climb over 20,000m as they cycle from Land's End to John O'Groats in 9 days. The training is well underway and he has ridden over 1800 miles in the first 5 months of the year - and that excludes many boring hours on the turbo in the garage.
30 years ago Julian was a troop commander in 42 Commando Royal Marines during the Falklands War. He left the Corps in 1988 but in the intervening years watched as the Corps has become involved in a steady stream of military conflicts, most notably in recent years, Iraq and Afghanistan. The physical and mental toll on the individual Marine has been significant and the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund has been set up to meet the needs of those impacted by injury and the stress of front line conflict.
